BIOLOGICAL RESERVE OF FUDEBIOL (CONSERVATION & ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS)
ACI Costa Rica is a non-profit organization founded in 1967, whose main goal is to promote programs of intercultural learning and international volunteer service (IVS) for people from all around of the world, facilitating their experience in social and ecological projects, developing global citizens.
ACI wants to contribute to solidarity and friendship between the different societies of our globalized world, to sustainable human development, and personal growth of our participants.
Our organization is an active full member of the International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE), a federation of more than 40 intercultural and IVS organizations located in the five continents. ICYE Headquarters are placed in Berlin, Germany. The federation of ICYE has been recognized as International Peace Messenger by the United Nations.
ACI Costa Rica has developed partnerships with other networks and programs such as: The Committee of Coordination of International Voluntary Service (CCIVS), associate to UNESCO, The Alliance of European Organizations (ALLIANCE), Volunteering Matters from United Kingdom (VM), VolontEUROPE, Weltwärs from the German government, and ERASMUS + from the European Union.
The experiences we promote are mainly focused on incoming and outgoing programs, involving long and short-term periods, for groups and individuals. These programs are managed in cooperation with our local Costa Rican networks, partner organizations and communities such as: The Federation of Social Organizations (FOS) and YO ME UNO from the private initiate, and others.
This is a grass roots organization located in the small village of Quebradas, which is located near to the town of San Isidro in El General Valley. This valley is surrounded by high mountains such as Cerro de la Muerte (3491 meters above sea level) and the highest mountain of Costa Rica, Chirripó at 3820 meters.
The town of Quebradas was founded by farmers. Today, many people work in the closest town, San Isidro. They also make a living from agricultural products such as coffee, sugar cane, fruits and vegetables.
The Biological Center of Quebradas is managed by FUDEBIOL (Fundación para el Desarrollo del Centro Biológico Las Quebradas), which is a non-profit grass roots organization launched in 1989. Their mission is to stop the deforestation of the Quebradas River basin, which is the source of drinking water for the whole town of San Isidro and most of the region of Pérez Zeledón. In the Center, they have also built an educational hub. The project site is located 3km uphill from the community of Quebradas, between 1000 and 2500 meters above sea level.
Possible tasks for the volunteer:
• To maintain the garden of medical plants
• To maintain the (Butterfly) Garden
• To maintain the channel around the lagoon
• To maintain the trails inside the Reserve
• To clean and to maintain green areas
• To make new informative wooden signs for the trails
• To plant flowers and trees and others on the access road
• To paint and to maintain the buildings
Schedule for the volunteer:
From Monday to Friday 5-8 hours a day (depending on tasks and weather)
The volunteers stay in a host family of the community, in Quebradas, Perez Zeledon.
3 meals per day are provided by the family.
Quebradas de San Isidro is located around 6 km from the center of San Isidro, in which you can find all the basic services (Banks, Supermarkts, Restaurants, Gyms).
The languages of the workcamp are English and Spanish.
Required skills and interests of the volunteer:
• To be in good physical conditions
• To work on hard duties such as constructing and maintaining of trails
• To live under simple conditions and be willing to eat the typical food, probably
rice and beans with other local vegetables everyday (the volunteer will receive
three meals a day)
• To be ready to walk uphill for 50 minutes every morning in order to get to the
project and walk back to the host family in town after finishing work every
Minimum stay of 2 weeks.Please arrive to Costa Rica 3 days before you start the project. The third day you will travel to the community (host family). Fudebiol receives volunteers all the week.

SPANISH CLASSES FEE:
In case you book Spanish lessons, they will take place at the ACI office before the volunteer work starts. We hire experienced teachers who will help our participants to develop the vocabulary, speaking and comprehension skills necessary for a successful experience at the volunteer project(s) of their choice. The prices include the stay with a host family and three meals a day.

The total cost of your volunteer program with ACI will be:
The cost of your volunteer project(s) + Spanish Classes (if applicable) + the administrative ACI Fee depending on the total amount of weeks that you would like to participate.
Local transportation, international insurance and airfare will be covered by the volunteer.
Things you need to Bring to Fudebiol:
• Mosquito repellent
• Sun block
• Rain coat
• Closed shoes (hiking shoes)
• Extra shoes (tennis shoes, flip flops)
• Work clothes (that you don´t mind getting dirty)
• All in a backpack instead of suitcase
