FUNDACIÓN MARÍA (Elderly Home)
ACI Costa Rica is a non-profit organization founded in 1967, whose main goal is to promote programs of intercultural learning and international volunteer service (IVS) for people from all around of the world, facilitating their experience in social and ecological projects, developing global citizens.
ACI wants to contribute to solidarity and friendship between the different societies of our globalized world, to sustainable human development, and personal growth of our participants.
Our organization is an active full member of the International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE), a federation of more than 40 intercultural and IVS organizations located in the five continents. ICYE Headquarters are placed in Berlin, Germany. The federation of ICYE has been recognized as International Peace Messenger by the United Nations.
ACI Costa Rica has developed partnerships with other networks and programs such as: The Committee of Coordination of International Voluntary Service (CCIVS), associate to UNESCO, The Alliance of European Organizations (ALLIANCE), Volunteering Matters from United Kingdom (VM), VolontEUROPE, Weltwärs from the German government, and ERASMUS + from the European Union.
The experiences we promote are mainly focused on incoming and outgoing programs, involving long and short-term periods, for groups and individuals. These programs are managed in cooperation with our local Costa Rican networks, partner organizations and communities such as: The Federation of Social Organizations (FOS) and YO ME UNO from the private initiate, and others.
This organization aims to provide a quality service to elderly people who require it as a result of their situation either of poverty or disability, by means of comprehensive care in an appropriate setting according to current guidelines.
Possible tasks for the volunteer:
The tasks are mainly related to providing company and sharing experiences with the
• Talk with the elderly people in order to get to know their likes, needs, health
and to benefit from their advice and experience
• Participating in activities such as exercise or workshops (sewing, cooking, arts
and crafts etc.)
• Coordinate some activities with the health professionals who are working in the
• Help during meals to serve the elderly people
Schedule for the volunteer:
From Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 4:00pm
The volunteers stay in a host family. The host family will be in the area of the project.
3 meals per day are provided by the family.
Santo Domingo de Heredia is located around 111 km from the center of Heredia, in which you can find all the basic services (Banks, Supermarkts, Restaurants, Gyms).
The languages of the workcamp are English and Spanish.
Required skills and interests of the volunteer:
• Must be eighteen years or older. Gender, civil status, race and social/economic
status do not matter.
• Must be presentable, have good personal hygiene, good conversational skills
and treat the residents with respect.
• Basic level of Spanish
• Patience and tolerance
• Be prepared to work with elderly people and to participate enthusiastically
• Be independent, have initiative and be prepared to complete many different
• Possess a mindset of solidarity and be prepared to give a generous commitment
to fulfil your potential whilst respecting and actively defending the dignity of the
resident and allowing the personal development of each resident with empathy
Minimum stay of 4 weeks.Please arrive to Costa Rica 3 days before you start the project. The third day you will start in the Project. Fundación Maria receives volunteers just Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Social projects require volunteers to either have a basic level of Spanish or to book classes upon arrival (Optional).
As a complement of our Short-Term Program, Spanish language classes are offered by ACI-CR to the participants and can be arranged with our private teacher starting from one week or more. Whether the volunteer receives his/her Spanish classes with our private teacher depends on the availability of the private teacher.

SPANISH CLASSES FEE:
In case you book Spanish lessons, they will take place at the ACI office before the volunteer work starts. We hire experienced teachers who will help our participants to develop the vocabulary, speaking and comprehension skills necessary for a successful experience at the volunteer project(s) of their choice. The prices include the stay with a host family and three meals a day.
Price for 1 week : $ 300
Price for 2 weeks: $ 600
Price for 3 weeks: $ 900
Price for 4 weeks: $ 1200
The total cost of your volunteer program with ACI will be:
The cost of your volunteer project(s) + Spanish Classes (if applicable) + the administrative ACI Fee depending on the total amount of weeks that you would like to participate.
Local transportation, international insurance and airfare will be covered by the volunteer.
Things you need to Bring to Fundación Maria:
• Sun protector
• Dress appropriately, no skirts or blouses with pronounced necklines
• Jeans or Leggings
• Extra shoes (tennis shoes)
• Work clothes (that you don´t mind getting dirty).
