ANAMPE (PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES)
ACI Costa Rica is a non-profit organization founded in 1967, whose main goal is to promote programs of intercultural learning and international volunteer service (IVS) for people from all around of the world, facilitating their experience in social and ecological projects, developing global citizens.
ACI wants to contribute to solidarity and friendship between the different societies of our globalized world, to sustainable human development, and personal growth of our participants.
Our organization is an active full member of the International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE), a federation of more than 40 intercultural and IVS organizations located in the five continents. ICYE Headquarters are placed in Berlin, Germany. The federation of ICYE has been recognized as International Peace Messenger by the United Nations.
ACI Costa Rica has developed partnerships with other networks and programs such as: The Committee of Coordination of International Voluntary Service (CCIVS), associate to UNESCO, The Alliance of European Organizations (ALLIANCE), Volunteering Matters from United Kingdom (VM), VolontEUROPE, Weltwärs from the German government, and ERASMUS + from the European Union.
The experiences we promote are mainly focused on incoming and outgoing programs, involving long and short-term periods, for groups and individuals. These programs are managed in cooperation with our local Costa Rican networks, partner organizations and communities such as: The Federation of Social Organizations (FOS) and YO ME UNO from the private initiate, and others.
Anampe is a center for multiple attention for exceptional people and is classified by a great diversity of disabilities, such as Down Syndrome, West Syndrome, San Felipo Syndrome, Autistic Persons, People with Asperger, Moderate, severe, mild mental retardation, psychological or mental problems, among others.
The community of Anampe consists out of youths, adults and adolescents who have gone through difficult events in their lives, such as abandonment, abuse, drug addiction, among others, from an age of 19 to 61 years.
Anampe has a group of professionals in four different areas. Those are: Occupational Therapy, Industrial Arts, Home Education and Special Education. There are many different activities occurring in Anampe such as days of recreation and sports, where all the teachers meet at a strategic point and work with the group through outdoor activities, recreational exercises, dance, movements or group work. Moreover, there are schedules of assistance with the teachers every day of the week, where the work together with the teacher carrying out projects, developing skills, performing playful activities of fine and gross motor growth, among others.
Possible tasks for the volunteer:
• Hand out lunches and coffee or bread at coffee time.
• Help with cleaning tables and floors after lunch or coffee.
• Help with the arrangement of chairs in special activities for the population to
• Help with the cleaning of the house.
• Help in the kitchen with the preparation of the meal, cleaning of dishes.
If the volunteer has the initiative and skills, he can also ask permission to set up own
activities at the center, such as:
• Games, songs, etc.
• Playful activities
• Workshops (music, art, etc.)
• Foreign language classes (for example English classes)
• Classes of Lesco (sign language used in Costa Rica)
Schedule for the volunteer:
From Monday to Friday from 09:00am to 4:00pm.
The volunteers stay in a host family which will be near the project.
3 meals per day are provided by the family.
Location: From the church La Basílica de Santo Domingo, 100 meters to the north and 200 meters to the east, house #14. Santo Domingo, Heredia, Costa Rica.
The languages of the workcamp are English and Spanish.
Required skills and interests of the volunteer:
• Desire to work
• Peacefulness with the population
• Vocation to help people and intercourse with people with disabilities
• Appropriate clothing to work with closed and low shoes, comfortable clothes.
Please arrive to Costa Rica 3 days before you start the project. The third day you will start in the Project. Anampe receives volunteers all the week.
Social projects require volunteers to either have a basic level of Spanish or to book classes upon arrival (Optional).
As a complement of our Short-Term Program, Spanish language classes are offered by ACI-CR to the participants and can be arranged with our private teacher starting from one week or more. Whether the volunteer receives his/her Spanish classes with our private teacher depends on the availability of the private teacher.

SPANISH CLASSES FEE:
In case you book Spanish lessons, they will take place at the ACI office before the volunteer work starts. We hire experienced teachers who will help our participants to develop the vocabulary, speaking and comprehension skills necessary for a successful experience at the volunteer project(s) of their choice. The prices include the stay with a host family and three meals a day.

Price for 3 weeks: $ 900
Price for 4 weeks: $ 1200
The total cost of your volunteer program with ACI will be:
The cost of your volunteer project(s) + Spanish Classes (if applicable) + the administrative ACI Fee depending on the total amount of weeks that you would like to participate.
Local transportation, international insurance and airfare will be covered by the volunteer.
