ACI Costa Rica is a non-profit organization founded in 1967, whose main goal is to promote programs of intercultural learning and international volunteer service (IVS) for people from all around of the world, facilitating their experience in social and ecological projects, developing global citizens.
ACI wants to contribute to solidarity and friendship between the different societies of our globalized world, to sustainable human development, and personal growth of our participants.
Our organization is an active full member of the International Cultural Youth Exchange (ICYE), a federation of more than 40 intercultural and IVS organizations located in the five continents. ICYE Headquarters are placed in Berlin, Germany. The federation of ICYE has been recognized as International Peace Messenger by the United Nations.
ACI Costa Rica has developed partnerships with other networks and programs such as: The Committee of Coordination of International Voluntary Service (CCIVS), associate to UNESCO, The Alliance of European Organizations (ALLIANCE), Volunteering Matters from United Kingdom (VM), VolontEUROPE, Weltwärs from the German government, and ERASMUS + from the European Union.
The experiences we promote are mainly focused on incoming and outgoing programs, involving long and short-term periods, for groups and individuals. These programs are managed in cooperation with our local Costa Rican networks, partner organizations and communities such as: The Federation of Social Organizations (FOS) and YO ME UNO from the private initiate, and others.

Travail: 

This is a public primary school that takes cares of children with disabilities in three different areas: physical, visual, auditory or mental. The school is financed by the government, and the school year begins in mid-February and lasts until December. There are two months of holidays at the end of the year as well as 15 days during July. For this reason it is recommended that volunteers do not apply for work in January- February-July and December. There about 200 children in the school, aged from 7 to 12 years old, as well as some teenagers who also study here. There are 25 teachers and administrative staff who work in the different areas of the school.

Possible tasks for the volunteer:
• Assisting the teachers in the classrooms
• Assisting in activities for the children
• Assisting the therapists
• Some paper work and maybe translations for the office
• Preparing material
• Assisting in music and sports lessons
• Supporting the children in self-development

Schedule for the volunteer:
Monday to Friday from around 8:30 am to 3:30 pm (it depends on the time, schedule will be given by the project).

Hébergement et nourriture: 

The volunteers stay in a host family. The host family will be in the area of the project.
3 meals per day are provided by the family.

Conditions préalables: 

The languages of the workcamp are English and Spanish.

Required skills and interests of the volunteer:
• Basic Spanish Level (if the volunteer does not speak Spanish, it´s recommended
that he/she takes at least 4 weeks of Spanish classes by ACI-CR)
• To love children and be ready to work with disabled children
• To be dynamic, have initiative and creativity
• To be available to support the teachers
• Knowledge of first aid (not 100% necessary but recommended)
• Knowledge of Sign Language LESCO (Recommended). They will teach you how
to use it
• Ability to deal with emergency situations
• Patience and tolerance
Important notes:
The volunteer might need to learn to teach Braille, Abacus, LESCO and orientation as well as mobility to the students.

Minimum stay of 4 weeks. Please arrive to Costa Rica 3 days before you start the project. The third day you will start in the Project. Centeno Guell receives volunteers just Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Social projects require volunteers to either have a basic level of Spanish or to book classes upon arrival (Optional).
As a complement of our Short-Term Program, Spanish language classes are offered by ACI-CR to the participants and can be arranged with our private teacher starting from one week or more. Whether the volunteer receives his/her Spanish classes with our private teacher depends on the availability of the private teacher.

SPANISH CLASSES FEE:
In case you book Spanish lessons, they will take place at the ACI office before the volunteer work starts. We hire experienced teachers who will help our participants to develop the vocabulary, speaking and comprehension skills necessary for a successful experience at the volunteer project(s) of their choice. The prices include the stay with a host family and three meals a day.
Price for 1 week : $ 300
Price for 2 weeks: $ 600
Price for 3 weeks: $ 900
Price for 4 weeks: $ 1200

The total cost of your volunteer program with ACI will be:
The cost of your volunteer project(s) + Spanish Classes (if applicable) + the administrative ACI Fee depending on the total amount of weeks that you would like to participate.
Local transportation, international insurance and airfare will be covered by the volunteer.

Rules of the project:
• Respect the authority of the people in charge and the rules of the institution
• Should not wear sandals, jewelry or shorts
• If the volunteer has dreadlocks or long hair, he/she should tie it up
• Piercings should be removed or covered up as the children could hurt the volunteer

Things you need to Bring to Centeno Guell:
• Sun protector
• Dress appropriately
• Jeans or Leggings
• Extra shoes (tennis shoes)
• Work clothes (that you don´t mind getting dirty)
• Materials to use with the children
• You can bring backpack or suitcase
